Stake in the Ground

I've put a stake in the ground, and it's.. in Canada! Sure, there are lots of good marathons in the U.S. And there are reasons I didn't choose them. Not the least of which--and I know this will peg me as a wimp--the USATF ban on headphones. Sorry, unless someone promises to run every step of the way with me during the marathon, I'm not running alone AND without music. And I don't have enough time in a few short weeks to wean myself from this dependence.

Also, I really DO intend to qualify for Boston. Which means I have only a few months to train before summer is here (can't expect to race well in 75 degree weather), and I really do want the course elevation change to be reasonable. That pretty much eliminates most US races in May and June. So, in my way-too-many-hour search, I'd actually considered and passed on Ottawa. It isn't flat. But, Vince encouraged me to look at it again, and after careful consideration, I decided to go for it. I've now entered and booked my hotel for Ottawa, Ontario in Canada on May 25th (Memorial Day Weekend). That is now exactly 88 days away. You can be sure I am counting. It's written up on my white board, and adjusted daily.

You'll see the link out the right. It is not a flat course. In fact, the first section is a series of gently rolling hills, with elevation changes of 90' or less. Which has motivated me to spend more time on hills in general. Bonus: I live in a hilly rural area. One more reason to get off the treadmill and out on the roads. Of course, I'm wondering just HOW hilly are my roads. What does a 90' hill look like? Feel like? Sure, I know to what the incline on my treadmill translates. One percent is 52' per mile, two percent is 104' per mile, and so on. I always set it to at least one percent. And I know that two percent is hard and tiring.

This has all motivated me to FINALLY download the training software for my Garmin. It's about time I knew what my hills were like. So, today, I had an easy 4-miler, and I went to the right from my house--an area I know has a huge hill. A hill, in fact, two years ago, I could not run up. I now run up with ease, short steps, lifting me to the top. Not speedily, mind you, but no problem.


I've enjoyed this new "gadgety" toy more than you can imagine. I have so much fun looking at my runs in so many different ways. I'm only disappointed that I haven't done this before. If you have a Garmin, I recommend you take a look at your runs. It's pretty easy, and once you get the drivers installed, it works seamlessly every time.

So, here you can see my four mile run. And the nice, big hill, up and down at about 1.25 miles, and again that far from the end as I ran down. Total elevation change of nearly 150'.

Rock on. Ottawa never goes above 90'. I say, "Bring it."

Cool Runners I Know, Episode 2: Bill Harkins

This time it was worth the pain. I had a marathon medal to bite down on. And something of far greater value—the sure knowledge of friends there for me in both loss and victory, with whom to share the miles and trials of life.” –Bill Harkins, Second Wind.

Bill Harkins’ pursuits are widely varied: rodeo competitor (where he met his wife, Eileen), construction project manager, accomplished professional musician, part-time writer, marathoner, and running coach. Now 72, he began running late in life and wrote a book on the subject in 1996, entitled Second Wind. Not to be found anywhere, this story is worthy of another printing.

Though I’ve known Bill for a few years, I stopped all efforts in learning more about him until I’d completed a careful reading. Full of irreverent charm and life wisdom, he tells the story of how he evolved from the “couch of doom” (to use a Steve Runner term) and life-threatening heart troubles into a vitally healthy and physically fit runner, inspiring and mentoring many others along the way.

He knew he was making unhealthy choices, and his health was deteriorating. But, “Making things worse is easier by far than making them better.” He soon found himself unconscious on the floor, an alarmed Eileen standing over him. At thirty pounds overweight, he described his 5’ 7” frame, “My stomach looked as if I’d swallowed a basketball.”

Two years into his running journey he peered at his metamorphosed shape, “The image in the mirror now looked trim and fit… Yes, there was a little thrill in looking at myself. I did look great. And I knew better than anyone else how hard I’d worked to accomplish that.”

It’s a story of struggle as he lost his job, and a story of heartbreak as he lost his son, Bill. With more than one defeat along the way, he ultimately triumphs and joyfully crosses the finish of his first marathon. To read it dry-eyed to the end would be to remain untouched by an incredibly moving story.

In addition to Second Wind, he formerly wrote about running for Master Pieces Magazine in Kansas City and Faster than a Speeding Turtle. He taught Recreational Running as part of the Blue Springs School District Community Education program. I took that class after I’d been running for a few months, and Bill was one of the first “coaches” I ever knew.

What particularly touches me is how Bill has such a heart for those around him. Self-defined as “ornery,” those who run with him regularly see the genuine teddy-bear heart in spite of his protests to the contrary.

Debbie Canfield, a regular in our running club and Bill’s weekly biking partner during the warm months had this to say about Bill:

“He is an amazing person. One of the things that I appreciate is his dry wit and his quick response one-liners. I believe one of his gifts is that of mentoring. He truly cares about his friends and fellow runners and does whatever he can to coach and encourage them. He loves to eat out at "nice" restaurants and has closed down many jazz bars. Most of the local jazz folks know him by name. He is crazy about his granddaughter, Emily, who was born in China and adopted by his daughter. She spends most weekends with Bill and Eileen.”

Verna Troutman, his “editor and sounding board” for much of his writing and dear friend of Bills had this to say. (And if you haven’t already, please read the entry on Verna a few weeks back. Her story was my inaugural entry for “Cool Runners I Know.”):

“After discovering he had a passion for running he pursued further education to get some qualifications for teaching and coaching. I know he has an Associates Degree in some exercise category, I think having to do with the physically impaired. At least, I know he did his internship with impaired kids. He also went to the Cooper Institute in Dallas for further training. Besides teaching a running class for the Blue Springs schools, he also worked part time for the Jewish Community Center for a while. As far as I am concerned, his most notable running achievements have had to do with his teaching, coaching and mentoring others. He is very informed on training methods and programs.”

Alex: Bill, I really enjoyed your book and learning more about you and your running. What would you consider your greatest running achievement?

Bill: I was never fast, and I often crashed in marathons due to calf cramps. Maybe the big achievement was running Kansas City two weeks after crashing and burning at Chicago. Or going back to Chicago and taking care of unfinished business.

One thing I achieved was the knowledge of how running works and should be done. Now, if you ask me what I am most proud of—and grateful for—in my running life, it is having been able to pass that knowledge to others who were able to use it to achieve far better performances than I ever could.

A: I remember reading about the first DNF in Chicago, and was quite moved to read about how you turned it around just a couple of weeks later. How many marathons have you run?

B: Too few, and too many. I ran in five marathons, and crashed and burned in two of them. My calves locked up solid in my first marathon, at Chicago, and again in the last, at Springfield, MO. In between I managed to successfully run Kansas City, Twin Cities (Minneapolis-Saint. Paul) and Chicago on the second try.

A: You’ve been such an inspiration to so many people, from great to small. Who has been your greatest running mentor?

B: There were two. David Virtue taught me the science and mechanics of running. Verna Troutman taught me to love running. Mentoring isn’t teaching, it’s enabling by example and encouragement. Verna and I fed off each other in the early years of our running, sharing what we each learned, encouraging each other and helping each other with training plans. We laughed about who coached whom, but looking at what Verna has accomplished in running, it’s pretty clear who was the one with more talent and knowledge. Perhaps more important was Verna’s mentoring in areas of life away from running. There were a lot of philosophical discussions in the long miles (aren’t there always?) and Verna made me think—and re-think—many things in my life.

A: Everyone, Verna included, has mentioned your time at The Cooper Institute. Can you talk about that a little bit?

B: Due to some twists of fate, I looked into getting certified as a personal trainer. You can study at home for several months, then travel to wherever the next test is being given to take the exams; or you can go to Dr. Kenneth Cooper’s research institute in Dallas for a solid week of classes and hands-on training. As Cooper is to blame for this whole running/aerobic exercise business in the first place, why not learn at the trough from the horse’s mouth?

My class began at the institute on November 12th, 2001. That morning, with the horrors of 9/11 still fresh in everyone’s mind, we heard the news that another airliner had just crashed into a crowded part of Brooklyn, NY. This one turned out to be an accident, but we were a pretty somber crew that first day. At the end of a grueling week of ten-hour days and written and practical tests, most of us were certified as personal trainers. I went back to The Cooper Institute in September 2006 to add a certification for training older adults, and later completed a home-study curriculum in nutritional counseling.

Being there is the best, however. The instructors are top-notch, many of whom travel throughout the world “training the trainers” for US and foreign military branches. The campus is several acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, fully walled, in an elegant section of Dallas. There is a four star hotel on campus, two restaurants, a huge, state of the art fitness center, a mile-and-a-half outdoor running path that meanders around the many buildings and the duck pond. The resident ducks literally own the place: they were part of the estate Cooper purchased to build the institute, and their continued presence, care and feeding are part of the terms of sale.

The Cooper Institute is the largest aerobics research center in the world, with a massive library of books and materials on the subject, all of which are available to the students both while there and, later, online, along with anytime consultations with former instructors.

The things I learned at The Cooper Institute became a large part of what I tried to teach to the students in my running classes and the individuals I coached.

A: Clearly, your time at Cooper formed a lot of your ideals for running. What is your coaching philosophy?

B: Never thought about it as such. I tried to coach by doing it with the students. I believe things like nutrition, injury prevention, hydration, body mechanics, etc. are learned in a classroom setting, but running is learned on the track and the roads, in company with experienced—and knowledgeable—runners. That’s why I ran with the classes, and invited former students and veteran runners to run with them, too.

A: A lot of us view you as sort of the grandfather of the Little Blue Indians. I know I’ve been running with you guys for a little over two years now. Did you start the LBI running club?

B: No. I can’t and don’t take any credit for that. The group was started by a handful of former students from one of the running classes who wanted to keep running together after the class ended. I recall that Becky O’Connor and Susanne Reed were the ringleaders, and I think some others involved were Jeannie McCoy, Pat Stevens, Andrea Melanson. If I got some names wrong, or missed some, forgive me. The group was up and running strong before I was fully aware of it.

So, the students started it on their own, and were kind enough to let me join them and bring students from following classes to the trail to run with them on Saturdays. It became an additional training venue for the classes—a very important one when the classes began training for longer distances. Many students then stayed with the group for the Saturday runs when their classes ended.

The beauty of the LBI is that it has continued and grown, remains free and open to all, and has even given birth to a biking sub-division - the brainchild of Debbie Canfield who one day so innocently suggested it might be fun if a few of us took a ride together. That led to a sudden upsurge in sales at The Bike Stop, and a commensurate depletion of half a dozen bank accounts as competition for the fastest set of wheels took hold.

A: Of the hundred or more students in your classes, how many do you think are still running?

B: Again there’s no way to know for certain. I’d occasionally see a student at a race, years after they were in a class. Sometimes they’d spot me and remind me who they were and what class they were in. They were usually passing me, and ran off and left me after the brief amenities.

Last year, someone I helped in an individual session called me up—after five years—to say they are still out there, still running regularly on their own, and just wanted me to know it. It gives you goose bumps when things like that happen.

A: What advice would I give to someone starting to run later in life?

B: Start earlier, so you can enjoy the fun longer. Seriously? Start earlier…..

Okay. The old adage about it never being too late, is an old adage for a reason; it’s true. The human body is a remarkable instrument. If asked nicely, in the right way, it can and will respond to training with amazing results. Studies conducted in nursing homes proved that people in their eighties and nineties, when given the opportunity to perform mild exercise improved in areas such as balance, lung capacity, dynamic and absolute strength.

I know everyone is told to consult their doctor before starting an exercise regimen, especially running. At the risk of being labeled a heretic or a danger to old folks, I think we have to take that with a grain of salt. Some doctors really don’t understand what recreational running is, or how it can be started and continued safely, so they take the safe way out and disparage it for older adults. We lost a potential runner one year because a doctor just “put his foot down and said no.” That person was in good health, had no medical conditions that would prevent running. But the doctor said they were too old to start. I hate that. These are our bodies, and we know them better than anyone else. And not every doctor is knowledgeable about exercise. We had another runner begin then stop because a doctor told her running was the worst thing anyone could do and if he ever saw her running he’d know she was really stupid. No kidding, she quoted him to me just that way. And she was proud of herself for taking his advice, adding, “and he’s a sports doctor for the Chiefs.” I asked her to ask him if he ever tried telling that to Marcus Allen. But she was convinced, and never ran with us again.

It’s never too late to do whatever you can.

A: Copy that. I’ve always believed you are still going to be the age you are going to be one year from now, five years from now. Why not spend it doing what you want to do? So, for those of us who love to read and grow as runners, can you tell us about some books that had an impact on you?

B: Jeff Galloway wrote the bible for beginning runners and those moving up from the beginning stages. It’s called Galloway’s Book On Running, and was the first running book I ever read. It is the best first book for any beginning runner.

Lore Of Running, by Tim Noakes, is a great reference book for any serious runner. It has been updated through the years as new knowledge has been obtained.

While not a running book, per se, Covert Bailey’s Smart Exercise is a good primer on exercise physiology in layman’s terms.

Probably the book that impacted me most is John L. Parker’s Once A Runner. It’s fiction, a story about a college miler and his trials and tribulations seeking to break four minutes. It’s a pretty good insight into the mind and heart of a runner. It’s a short book, and I often took it from the shelf and re-read it, in whole or part, before races. If you are looking for “the secret” to running, it is revealed in this book.

In closing, I wanted to share that along the path I took to really learn “who Bill is,” I discovered that Bill and I share many things in common. Some great—a frightening health “wake-up call” that spawned our passion for fitness, a past as a musician and a running career that started late in life—but some not so great. We both buried a child. And I leave you with a deeply moving quote from Bill to me that perhaps reveals just a little bit more about whom we both are.

“So, we are members of that club we will never ask anyone to join. We cry at unexpected moments, for no apparent reason; a line from a song, someone of similar appearance passing by, a magician performing at Crown Center (Bill studied magic). And though it gets better the hurt never goes away, and the tears are never far beneath the surface, but always and only when we are alone. And once in a while we meet someone who is also there, and all we can do is nod to each other in silent companionship. “

An Eat-Clean Testimonial

A pound of fat takes up a lot of room. Imagine a full pound of lean chicken breast. It’s twice that volume and then some. Now imagine four-and-a-half pounds of fat. Ewww, ya that’s what I was thinking. Well, I’m four-and-a-half pounds lighter, and I’ll guarantee you most of that is fat.

I’m fifteen days into “eating clean,” impressed by my discipline and the radical change it has brought into my life. My tastes, my fueling, my energy have all evolved. I stood in the kitchen last night after my husband got home, and showed off how baggy my (formerly tight) jeans were, “Look at what it’s done for my waist, “ I proudly showed off. “I could always lose weight, but it seemed to come out of my face and my legs, never really tapping into this,” as I pointed to my flattening tummy. “Hey, I can almost slide them over my hips!” In a quick motion, to my surprise, I did. Like the snow melting from the jagged mountain top (to use Tosca’s words), I am erasing the fat I don’t want, leaving the lean body I want revealed. I think I’m half way there now.

Eating Clean: My First Week

The Eat-Clean Diet.

Let's get this straight. I am not fat, and I don't think I am fat. And I don't prance around in my latest dress putting my husband on the spot asking him if I look fat. (No, I save that for my girlfriends!). So, if you know me, don't think that I have some eating disorder because I want to lose some fat. I am "skinny people fat."

Skinny people fat? Is that even a term? Well, no, I just made it up. But I want that last percentile of physical achievement. Guess what? My abs aren't perfect. There is a layer of fat over them. I do crunches. I run--take THIS Will Smith--MORE than 30 miles per week! I'd like to see that fat go away. Enough said about fat, I'm done. Eating clean and running aren't all about weight loss for me. In fact, I've actually gained weight as a runner.

But here's another fact: I can't eat any less food. I am hungry all the time. I have struggled with hypoglycemia my entire life, peaking in my mid-twenties by passing out at a mall. (Just like Tosca did in the grocery story, we bonded on that story.) I eat and eat before a run, trying to over-compensate. Because running is more important to me than being skinny. I want to feel good and burst with energy.

As I look at my abs, not bad, but not perfect; definitely not Will Smith "looking like I want them to look." Low blood sugar rules my day. I often lack energy and all I want to do is eat more... is there another answer out there? The medical community hasn't been helpful or interested in my hypoglycemia. "Eat peanut butter." Or, "Drink orange juice." Both high in sugar and sending me on an insulin binge roller-coaster.

So, Tosca claimed I could eat six times a day, according to the "eating clean" rules. And I would eat enough to never be hungry. I started the diet Saturday, eating only fresh fruits and vegetables combined with recipes in her cookbook. I've been strict. But if I'm hungry, I eat. I weighed myself on Friday before I started. It seemed like I ate too much over the weekend (
well, I wasn't walking around hungry and I ate a half a bowl of "eating clean guacamole" during the super bowl), and didn't even bother to hop on the scale. But, most notably, I never had the "shakes" from low blood sugar and I never felt weak.

Four days into the diet: I knew the news wouldn't be good with all this constant eating, but I'm hopeful that I haven't gained any weight. Here goes...

And the answer is... I have somehow LOST three pounds. What?! I actually get off the scale, reset it and get back on. Four days on the diet, eating tons of food, and I miraculously lost three pounds. I weighed in again today, and was down a total of four pounds. And I feel great! When I ran this morning, a moderate 6-miler with some strides after the end, I actually felt lighter and more energetic. It was a truly noticeable difference.

Get it; read it; try it out. I'm totally sold, and look forward to having nailed that huge part I've been missing, telling myself, "It's the DIET stupid!"
